Between November 11-22, 2024, the Environmental Quality Monitoring Laboratory, Institute of Chemistry at the State University of Moldova (USM) was hosting a training program for Ms. Kayumova Dilorom, Leading Researcher at the State Scientific Institution "Center for Research of Glaciers" of the National Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan. The program is part of the scientific visit referenced as SV-TAD7004-EVT2405712.
The primary objective of the scientific visit was to familiarize the participant with analytical methods for the stable isotope analysis (dH2 and dO18) and the chemical composition of water samples, as well as data processing and interpretation.
The program includes the following activities:
- Familiarization with the Picarro analyzer and Dionex ICS-6000 Ion Chromatography System;
- Understanding the standard operating procedures for water sample analysis in the laboratory;
- Data processing and interpretation for the two methods;
- Implementing a laboratory quality management system for chemical and stable isotope analysis;
- Case studies on the use of geochemical and stable isotope information for hydrology studies and water resource management.
The program also included discussions on the application of isotope hydrology studies to improve water management practices in Tajikistan and Moldova.
Expected outcomes of this training program include:
- Developing operational skills for equipment used to determine stable isotopes and chemical composition in glacier and snow cover water samples;
- Implementing reliable methods for analyzing glacier and snow cover samples;
- Training laboratory personnel on sample preparation techniques for analysis;
- Creating protocols and documentation for water chemical analysis using the ion chromatography system;
- Enhancing the use of modern analytical technologies for water resource management.

The training program is supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) within the technical cooperation project „Establishing capacities for isotope hydrology techniques for water resources and climate change impact evaluation” (cod IAEA/MOL7001), implemented during 2020-2023. This project significantly contributed to developing infrastructure and research capacities for isotope analysis in Moldova. This collaboration represents an important step in strengthening international relations and scientific exchange in the field of isotope hydrology and water resource management.
