Short history

The Laboratory Chemistry of Natural Compounds was founded in 1959 and headed then by acad. Gheorghe Lazurievski. The research activity developed fruitfully and the laboratory expanded significantly by several independent research groups, covering different areas of natural product chemistry. Consequently, it was divided in 1976 into three separate laboratories: Chemistry of Steroidal Compounds (headed by dr. Petru Ceban), Chemistry of Isoprenoids (headed by dr. Dumitru Popa) and Chemistry of Ethereal-Oleaginous Plants (headed by acad. Pavel Vlad).

Later on, after several structural changes, two of these laboratories merged in 1991 into the Laboratory of Terpenoid Chemistry (headed by acad. Pavel Vlad). Then, the laboratory was renamed into the Laboratory of Chemistry of Natural and Biologically Active Compounds (2016).
